With the help of our donors, partners, members, volunteers and relatives of the refugees overseas; Hope and Care sponsors multiple refugees each year.
The settlement support services Hope and Care offer to refugees and new immigrants include: finding housing, providing household items, clothing, and other basic necessities, orienting newly arrived refugees to the transportation systems, connecting them with community services, offering friendship, moral and emotional support. We also provide services like resume preparation and job search, assistance with translation and interpretation, orientation and information programs on Canadian culture.
We help our refugees access local settlement agencies and SPOs where they benefit from the different settlement programs funded by the government of Canada and provided by trained employees from these settlement agencies and SPOs.
All most all members of our congregation were refugees at some point in the past and hence have a lot of things in common with the newcomers; we believe sharing our stories with the refugees help ease the culture shock and sometimes the loneliness that comes with migrating to new country.
Our Learning and Community Enrichment (LACE) Program offers immigrants and refugees an opportunity to practice their English at Hope and Care's Tutoring and Mentoring Centre and at various Edmonton Public Library locations across the city.
Participants meet in groups with volunteers to improve their speaking skills and learn about resources at the library. Participants will have the chance to meet other newcomers who live in their community.
The goal of this program is to help new refugees/immigrants improve their English skills by practicing conversations with our native English speaking volunteers. This program also sets the foundation for adults interested in enrolling in formal English classes, such as the ESL or LINC.
